Traveling With Pets
1. Have a health certificate from your vet.
2. Make sure your pet has all of his or her vaccinations up to date.
3. Some recommend drugging your pet before flying while others do not. For our dog, we gave him his “doggy dope” so he would be in a drugged stupor through the trip to the airport, customs, and boarding. We timed it so the drugs would wear off just as we took off.
4. Make sure you know your airline’s Pet Guidelines.
5. Many countries will not allow pets. Research this prior to flying. Some countries require pets to be quarantined upon landing.
6. Many countries require pets to have a microchip implanted or ID tattoo. Research this for your destination.
7. Arrange for a time to spend with your pet and let him or her rest if flying through many layovers. And, most importantly, enjoy a bathroom break.
8. Make sure your pet carrier is large enough. Do not go cheap with your pet.
9. If flying, freeze water in a container. Your pet will be able to drink as it melts.
10. Have your pet ID with you at all times. Treat it as you would your own. Keep a digital copy if you are able to do so.
11. Have all the appropriate ID tags on your pet’s collar.
12. Keep a photo of your pet with you at all times during the trip.
13. Have a list of identifying features with you at all times.
14. Always clean up after your pet.
15. Carry your pet’s leash in your carry on bag.
16. If your pet has never travelled in a vehicle before, take him or her for short rides as a way to train them and to see if they will get carsick.
17. Make sure your pet is ready for the weather.
18. Make sure the pet is bathed and nails are clipped prior to the trip.
19. Let the airline attendants know that you are traveling with a pet.
20. If the flight is delayed, be sure to notify the airline staff that you are traveling with a pet, especially if the weather is extreme.
21. Exercise your pet prior to traveling.
22. No food or water around 4 hours before departure.
