14 Tips For Dealing With Jet Lag

14 Tips For Dealing With Jet Lag

1. The general rule is if you are traveling west, go to bed later for a couple of nights prior to your trip. If east, go to bed a couple of hours earlier for a few nights prior to your trip.

2. Adjust your sleeping and eating schedule by an hour or two for the week prior to your trip if the difference is only a couple of hours.

3. Bring earplugs and a blindfold to help you sleep.

4. Have a picture of family or other loved ones by your bed. This is comforting and may help you sleep.

5. Play your sleep aid/white noise app.

6. Keep the room cool, as this will help you to sleep well.

7. Keeping hydrated is very important.

8. Avoid alcohol and caffeine.

9. Once you have arrived, sleep or stay awake on your destination’s schedule. Stay up if you arrive during the day. Try to sleep if you arrive at night.

10. Get out during the day; just do not stay inside. The sun will help your brain adjust.

11. Eat light meals. Your digestive system is adapting, too. Large meals may increase your risk of constipation or diarrhea.

12. Exercise in the early morning or early in the evening.

13. Eat a breakfast high in protein: eggs, cheese, mushrooms, and/or meat.

14. Some take melatonin 30 minutes prior to the new bedtime to help them sleep.
