Money Tips
1. Use a money belt at all times.
2. Keep a small amount of local currency in a separate pouch or pocket. Money can roll up and be stored in a lip balm case.
3. Keep all ATM and credit card receipts.
4. Avoid ATMs that are poorly lit or in a hidden location.
5. Have a fake wallet with a couple of bills in it. If a thief approaches you, throw the wallet at him or her and run.
6. Wallets go in the front pocket or in the front of your jacket pocket.
Shopping Tips
1. Buy that ugly souvenir - it will be a great keepsake and something you will talk about for a long time.
2. Do not buy things you cannot pack or are not willing to ship home. Make sure what you buy will fit in your house.
3. Start low when haggling. Remember that they will never sell anything at a loss. Haggling is expected in many cultures.
4. Do not be afraid to walk away from a salesperson. They likely will follow you offering a better price - because they like your smile or you are the “first sale of the day” and that is good luck.
5. Do not let your purchase leave your sight. Oftentimes, the best statue or souvenir is on the shelf. While you look away, a switch is made and wrapped ever so carefully for you. The damaged souvenir all wrapped up tightly will then be handed to you with a grateful smile.
6. Buy presents for people who are taking care of your house back home. It will be appreciated and they will be more likely to help you out on your next trip.
