35 Apps for Travel




Download apps before you leave. They will be ready to go and you will not need to rely on another wireless network.

Sort the apps in separate folders so you can find them easily.

Be aware of any data charges while traveling before you use the following apps.


The following apps may prove useful on your journey:

  1. Alarm clock.

  2. AroundMe, which will show restaurants, hospitals, and other essentials in your area.

  3. City or country guides, such as Trip Advisor City Guides.

  4. Citymapper or CityMaps2Go.

  5. Crackle and watch movies or TV shows for free.

  6. Currency converter, such as xe.com.

  7. Digital maps.

  8. Dropbox and store images of your passport(s), visas, etc.

  9. First Aid. Do I really have Dengue Fever?

  10. Flashlight app, if your phone does not have one already built in.

  11. GasBuddy, which will help you find the cheapest gas.

  12. GateGuru, where you can find everything you need to know about what is in your favourite airports.

  13. Google Earth, Google Maps, and/or National Geographic World Atlas.

  14. JetLag Genie to assist with the dreaded jet lag.

  15. Language translator such as Google Translator or one of the many other translators you can buy. Some have speech capabilities so you can let your phone do the talking.

  16. Mint, to help keep track of your travel budget and expenses.

  17. News app, such as CBC or BBC.

  18. One or more of the various hotel search engines.

  19. QR scanner. Many businesses and products are using these to link to websites for details.

  20. Review apps such as yelp or urban diner. Avoid the bad restaurants.

  21. SitOrSquat to find out where public restrooms are located.

  22. Skype, to communicate back home or enable cheap calls.

  23. Some airlines now have their own apps that will allow you to board with your phone. Search to see if your airline has such an app.

  24. Subway and/or public transportation app.

  25. Trip Advisor app.

  26. TripIt, which will store your travel details.

  27. TuneIn Radio, which will allow you to listen to radio stations from around the world.

  28. Twitter. Airports and other travel information are often updated in real time. Other events are often updated as well.

  29. Unit converter. Miles to kilometers?

  30. Weather app.

  31. White noise or other relaxing music app to help you sleep.

  32. WiFi finder such as WiFi Finder (helps you to find free hotspots).

  33. World clock app.

  34. Your favorite book reading app and several books for entertainment on flights. Your device can store hundreds of books. Download classics at www.gutenberg.org/ for free.

  35. Your favorite card, board, or action games.
