High School Mindfulness Room Part 2

Updated: Nov 9, 2020

Yoga mat (right, black case), yoga blocks, more plants, and a comfortable banquette seating. The muscle massager has been very popular.

It's been almost 3 weeks since the start of our Mindfulness Room in the high school. It started with a need to provide our students with a place where they can take care of their social emotional needs and a grant as part of our Innovation Fund.

The feedback has been positive so far. Students will use the place for naps when they're tired or not feeling well. A student shared that he went there when he had a nervous breakdown. The muscle massager is very popular.

An unintended side effect? Small groups of students will go there to visit quietly rather than meditate - not the intended purpose of the room but not the worst outcome. Another side effect was that staff from other divisions wanted to use the room.

I asked some students and they said that they would not use the room if there were adults from other divisions there that they did not know. I declined their request based on that feedback.

Some of the new equipment in the room...

A salt lamp, crayons, mandalas to color, and Kleenex in case anyone gets emotional.
An iPad (locked) that is connected via Bluetooth to a speaker. Students and staff can use the Calm App for meditation.
A Tibetan bowl, meditation balls, mirror, and a Bluetooth speaker connected to the iPad.
A custom made seat and footstool for naps and relaxing.
A white noise machine for bird calls, rainfall, forest sounds and more.
