Marsh Crocodiles, Gharials, turtles, and a lot of flocking birds!
A long weekend away from the city and into nature was good for the soul!
We stayed at the Chambal River Safari Cottages, a family run business set amongst wheat, mustard, and potato fields. All of our adventures were arranged by Kunal from Travel With. He's helped to arrange our trip to Pangot Bird Sanctuary and Vanghat Lodge, which were both wonderful trips.
The Chambal River
The Chambal River is 965 km long and is part of the Ganges drainage system. It's unique in that it is not a Holy River in India, as most rivers are. It's actually a river where, historically, bad things happen. We bucked the trend and had a great time walking through a village, through the gulleys used by bandits to hide, and taking two river safaris. Birds of Chambal River.
Marsh Crocodiles
The Marsh Crocodiles lie on small islands that dot the Chambal River.
The males grow up to 3.5 m (10 feet long) while the females grow to 2.5 m (8 feet) in length. The crocodile keeps his mouth open to regular temperature (photo below).
Gharials
Male Gharials make Marsh crocodiles look small in comparison as they can grow up to 6 m (19 feet) in lenght. The females can grow up to 4.5 m (15 feet). That's a lot of fish to catch. The TV antennae looking device is used to release Gharials back into the river system. The Gharials scare easy so it was hard to get a good closeup shot of them.
Turtles
We saw two types of turtles: Softshell and Indian Tent. The one female Softshell Turtle appears ready to lay some eggs!
