Offense Wins Games, Defense Wins Championships

Updated: Nov 8, 2020

Aidan and I reviewed the video of Kirsi's Game 2 of the ASIAC tournament to calculate her stats. Everyone notices the scorer or the ball handler at this age but I wanted to see the impact of her defense, although she can score too.

She just missed a double double in a game that they won 21-4.

Her traditional stats:

  • 10 points (5/10 shooting)

  • 9 steals

  • 2 offensive rebounds

  • 1 defensive rebound

  • 2 assists

  • 3 turnovers

  • 1 personal foul

  • PER of 15.7 for the game

But I was more interested in other aspects of her game.

  • 1 - fouls drawn

  • 3 - the number of turnovers she forced

  • 6 - the number passes deflected (thus disrupting the offense)

  • 1 - 50/50 balls

She also had a couple of plays where he ran full court to stop a fast break. She's the first one back on defense and runs on every fast break.

Her help defense was also very good. For a Grade 8 student, that was what impressed me as much as anything.

The other aspect of Kirsi's game that I really appreciate is how she will pass the ball both in a half court set and, especially, pass it up on the fast break.

In any game, particularly middle school, the scorer stands out but I love watching defense and those little plays that can make a difference in the final score.
