Horton's Plains, Sri Lanka

(2018)

After driving a narrow, winding road up into the central highlands of Sri Lanka, we parked the vehicle and got ready for our hike through Horton's Plains National Park. With the Kirigalpoththa (2,389 metres) and Thotupola Kanda (2,357 metres) mountain peaks around us, we walked through montane grasslands and cloud forests.

The main destination is World's End, a sheer drop of 1,200 meters. The other attraction, other than the sheer beauty of the landscape, is Baker's Falls. Water from the tributary of the Belihul Oya cascades down 20 meters the falls named after a British big game hunter named Samuel Baker.

One lady decided that wearing high heal shoes on dirt paths was a good idea.

Many of the trees contort in painful, unnatural looking ways with lichen hanging from the branches making it look like a scene out of The Lord of the Rings.

On our way out of the park, a Sri Lankan Sambar Deer made an appearance.
