First Days at Home

We’ve been at home for 2 days now and things are going well. We left the hospital on Monday at noon and it was a welcome change, believe me! As helpful and nice as the staff was at the hospital, it was still annoying to be woken up in the middle of the night to get my blood pressure or temperature taken. It would take me at least half an hour to fall asleep again so in the end, I didn’t get nearly as much sleep as I thought I would have.

It was great to come home and bring Aidan with us. Simba wasn’t too sure about this new little baby but after a few sniffs, he seemed to be OK. It definitely was easier with Aidan than it was with Kirsi! 🙂 One of our friends has organized a “dinner brigade” for us. We have had fresh dinners brought to us every night since we’ve been home from the hospital and it has been wonderful. A couple friends who left for holidays gave us meals to freeze and pull out when we need them. We did this for my friend who had a baby 5 weeks ago and she loved it so she decided to organize it for us. It really is fantastic because it’s one less thing to have to think about this first week. I’d never heard of something like this before but I definitely will keep this idea going; it’s not difficult to do but it’s such a huge thing for the new parents.

We’ve gotten everything unpacked, put away in its spot and we’re working on getting some routines down now. Aidan is eating well and sleeps lots, just not at the right times! He has night and day mixed up and it’s been a couple sleepless nights for Der and me. It’s been really hard because not only does Aidan not want to sleep, he wants to eat nonstop for a few hours in the middle of the night. So, I end up exhausted and have no milk left and it makes for a frustrating experience. Plus, there are all the normal things a new mom has to deal with – recovery from delivery, hormone changes and cracked nipples (and let me tell you, those are more painful than you can imagine!!). We’re hoping to get him on track really soon so that we can all enjoy the days and nights a little bit better. On a super positive note, Kirsi has slept through the night the past two nights. It’s like she knows we need a break!! 😉 I’ve actually crawled in with her to get some much needed sleep when Der takes Aidan!

Everyone is enjoying our new little guy. Grandma has had lots of Aidan time and Kirsi loves to hold Baby Aidan and help us change his diaper. Der just loves holding him and watching him. I had my first spraying pee experience last night. I had forgotten to bring a pee-pee cloth for the diaper change and ended up with a wet baby and pee on my pants. That’ll teach ya!

Thank you to everyone who has sent us congratulations. I don’t have the time to reply to everyone but we really appreciate all the good wishes and thoughts. 🙂
